Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

What is the difference between visa-free, eVisa, ETA, and visa on arrival?

Visa-free means you can enter without applying for any travel document — your passport is sufficient for short tourist stays. An eVisa or ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is applied for online before departure and is usually approved within minutes to a few days. Visa on arrival means you obtain your visa at the port of entry by paying a fee and presenting documents. A traditional visa must be applied for at the embassy or consulate before travel and can take weeks to process.

Does this checker cover work visas or long-term stays?

No. This tool covers tourist and short-stay visit requirements only. Work visas, study permits, and long-term residence visas are governed by separate rules and almost always require a job offer, employer sponsorship, university enrolment, or a specific permit. If you are planning to work abroad, consult the destination country's official immigration portal and read our visa sponsorship guide.

How accurate is this data and how often is it updated?

Our visa requirement data is reviewed and updated periodically — current data was last reviewed in April 2026. Visa policies change frequently due to bilateral agreements, security situations, and reciprocity. While we aim for accuracy, you should always confirm the current requirements with the official embassy, consulate, or immigration portal of your destination country before booking travel.

What is the Schengen Area and which countries does it cover?

The Schengen Area is a zone of 27 European countries that have abolished internal border checks. A single Schengen visa allows travel across all member states for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Members include Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and others. The UK and Ireland are NOT in Schengen and have separate visa rules.

Can I extend a visa on arrival or eVisa once I am in the country?

It depends on the destination. Some countries allow on-the-ground extensions through the immigration department for an additional fee, while others require you to leave and re-enter. Extensions are generally not guaranteed and should not be relied upon for planning. If you need to stay longer than the standard tourist period, apply for a longer-validity visa from your home country before travelling.

My passport country is not in the list — what should I do?

Our database currently covers the most common passport countries by traveller volume. If your passport is not listed, the most reliable approach is to check the official embassy or consulate website of your destination country directly. The IATA Travel Centre and your destination's ministry of foreign affairs are also authoritative sources for visa requirements.

What is the difference between a tourist visa and a transit visa?

A tourist visa allows you to enter and stay in a country for leisure, sightseeing, or visiting friends and family for the duration permitted. A transit visa is a short-duration permit (typically 24–96 hours) that allows you to pass through a country en route to another destination — for example, when changing flights and leaving the airport. Some countries waive transit visas if you remain airside in international transit zones.

Should I trust this tool over the official embassy?

No — always treat embassy and consulate guidance as authoritative. This tool is designed to give you a fast preliminary answer and point you toward the right resources, but visa policy can change overnight, and individual circumstances (passport validity, criminal record, reason for travel) can affect eligibility. Use this checker as a starting point, then confirm with the official immigration portal of your destination country before booking flights or accommodation.
