Non-EU/EFTA hires need a cantonal work permit. Quotas apply, the employer must usually show they could not fill the role from Switzerland/EU, and cantons differ in how strictly they apply that test. Pay is high enough that the labour-market test is often the real filter, not salary. EU/EFTA citizens have a much easier Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons path — do not mix the two processes.
Global banks and tech use English internally. German is the default in Zurich daily life and many employers.
